About two weeks ago, JC Maloney came to this city to work as carriage trimmer for Miller & Son. Yesterday afternoon he went to the dam in company with several others and finally started up the valley road. It is supposed that he was shortly overcome by heat as he went to a house on the roadside and attempted to enter. The inmates supposing form his flushed face that he was intoxicated closed the door and he went about 100 yards further up the road and fell dying by the ditch side. Charley Darter who saw him ran up but life was then almost extinct and he died in a few moments. Mr. Maloney was about 55 years old, the picture of health and a splendid work man. He was a Mason in the Peoria, Ill Lodge and had served in the 74th Illinois regiment four years and three months. He carried a $1,000 paid up policy in the Masonic Mutual Benefit Insurance. His daughter in Peoria and two sons in Chicago were telegraphed for. Up to this afternoon none of them had been heard from however and unless they are the burial will take place on tomorrow. - kbz

J. A. McClure returned last night from Canton, Ill., where he went with the remains of J. C. Maloney, the gentleman who died of sun stroke here last Sunday. He found the deceased’s relatives to be eminently respectable and influential citizens of Canton. But one child was alive, a son about 20 years of age, residing with his grandmother. The deceased was buried by the side of his wife and daughter, Rev. Matthews of the Presbyterian Church conducting the funeral services.
